NEW YORK — Former Western Carolina standout and Olympic-hopeful Manteo Mitchell had a third-place showing in the elite section of the 400-meter dash last Saturday at the New Balance Indoor Games.

Mitchell posted a time of 47.69 seconds at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City. He finished behind fellow American Michael Courtney (47.38) and winner Lalonde Gordon of Trinidad Tobago (46.63).

Mitchell amassed for over 30 All-Southern Conference accolades in the sprints and relay events during his collegiate career at Western Carolina University.

He still trains and resides in Cullowhee while pursuing his Master’s in Education and serving as a volunteer assistant for both the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Western.

Mitchell is one of two former area college standouts hoping to qualify for the London Games this summer. Former UNC Asheville standout Natalie Pearson will be looking to qualify for her native country Great Britain — in either (or both) the 100- and 200- meter dashes.

Personal Records: (Outdoor) 100m – 10.24 sec (2010) 200m – 20.73 sec (2009) 400m – 45.95 sec (2011)
