Owen senior Emily Kimble won the high jump  at the KTC High School Indoor Classic.

Kimble cleared a height of 5 feet, 4.25 inches in Friday’s meet at East Tennessee State University.

TCR Meet #2: Record-setting day for Megan McDonald

It was a record-setting day for Roberson’s Megan McDonald in Wednesday’s  Polar Bear meet at TC Roberson.

The senior won three events and recorded new personal bests in each event — 55-meter dash (7.2), 500-meter run (1:18.70), 55-meter hurdles (8.4).

McDonald qualified for February’s indoor state meet in the 55 dash and 55 hurdles.

Asheville High Last Chance Rescheduled

The Asheville high last chance track and field meet scheduled for February 1st has been re-scheduled for Thursday, February 2nd.

The deadline for state entry has been adjusted to 8:00pm on the 4th.

West Henderson sweeps Polar Bear Championships

COLUMBUS — The West Henderson boys and girls indoor track and field teams swept the WNC Polar Bear Championships Wednesday at Polk County high school.

The West Henderson boys won by 39.5 points over Mitchell, 115.50-79, while the West girls also had a marginal win over cross-town rival East Henderson, 102-79.

Saban Nuw captured double victories to lead the Falcon boys, winning the high jump (6’0″) and 55-meter dash (6.86 seconds).

Heidi Brickhouse and Melissa White led the Falcon girls. Brickhouse won the shot put with a throw of 33 feet, 1 inch. White captured the 55 dash title with a time of 8.35.

Former WCU standout 3rd in 400 race in New York City

NEW YORK — Former Western Carolina standout and Olympic-hopeful Manteo Mitchell had a third-place showing in the elite section of the 400-meter dash last Saturday at the New Balance Indoor Games.

Mitchell posted a time of 47.69 seconds at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City. He finished behind fellow American Michael Courtney (47.38) and winner Lalonde Gordon of Trinidad Tobago (46.63).

Mitchell amassed for over 30 All-Southern Conference accolades in the sprints and relay events during his collegiate career at Western Carolina University.

He still trains and resides in Cullowhee while pursuing his Master’s in Education and serving as a volunteer assistant for both the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Western.

Mitchell is one of two former area college standouts hoping to qualify for the London Games this summer. Former UNC Asheville standout Natalie Pearson will be looking to qualify for her native country Great Britain — in either (or both) the 100- and 200- meter dashes.

D’Angelo, Kimble Earn Weekly Honors

TC Roberson’s Justin D’Angelo and Owen’s Emily Kimble are this week’s male and female WNCPrepTrack.com indoor athletes of the week.

The pair of seniors posted victories in their respective events at last Tuesday’s polar bear at TC Roberson.

D’Angelo won the 55-meter hurdles in 7.58 seconds, while Kimble captured first in the high jump with a leap of 5-feet, 6 inches.

Both D’Angelo and Kimble set new personal bests and qualified for next month’s indoor state championships.

TC Roberson’s Brooke Gordon and Robert Kovach were also in the running for this week’s honors.

Montreat College seeking applicants for a Volunteer Throws Coach

Montreat College is in search of a Volunteer Assistant Track & Field Coach for Throws. Montreat is a private, 4-year, Christ-centered institution that competes nationally in the NAIA and is part of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC).

Qualifications for the position include Bachelor’s degree, experience in the throwing events, and ability to work within and promote the mission of Montreat College.

Job responsibilities include conducting practices and coaching all aspects of the throwing events, traveling with the team, a willingness to help recruit, and a commitment to the team for the entirety of the season.
